Speaking on Nintendo Week recently Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime stated that the new Wii Legend of Zelda game will release "when it's perfect," leading many to believe that the title won't come out until 2011 (via CVG). This contradicts an interview with Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata at the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, in which the CEO lists releasing the newest Zelda title as one of the company's goals in 2010.

Fils-Aime could have been attempting to clarify this misunderstanding on Nintendo Week, saying, "the key message that Mr. Miyamoto and Mr. Aonuma is telling us is that it really has to be perfect when it launches," adding, "that really is what the Zelda fan is expecting." Nintendo's 2010 release schedule includes other big hitters Mario Galaxy 2 and the Team Ninja-developed Metroid: Other M, so it makes sense that the company would try and spread out its portfolio. We'll keep you updated as details are released.

Tyler says: The only thing that will get me excited about another Zelda game will be a complete reboot. Do I expect to be excited when the game is revealed to the world? Nope. I imagine Nintendo will make the same game it's been making for over 20 years. It's a tried-and-true formula for sure, I'm just tired of re-treading it through the same elf-in-green-tunic perspective.

Games like the recent Darksiders borrow heavily from Zelda's core game design, but at least it does different things with tone and art direction. No, I do not think Nintendo has the courage to radically reinvent its second-most-cherished mascot. We'll see if I'm wrong soon enough.
