With absolutely no time for pre-production on The Golden Compass game, I wasn't sure how the team would use my work. I was mostly under the impression my art would be used for promotional purposes but as the game started coming together the team really did replicate the concepts I illustrated. In the end my work was used as a style guide, promotional purposes and for providing inspiration to the team.

When the movie materials including concept art, shots of props, wardrobes and sets started coming in from our dedicated Sega on-set "asset wrangler" I was pleased to see we were on track! This material helped greatly in affirming my vision and adding the necessary details to match the film.

However, having photo references are only part of the puzzle. We still had to determine what the color palettes or moods for each scene would be. Usually we don't see these until a film is in post-production -- when all of the on-set editing is complete. When we were given access to the trailers and a few scenes in post-production, I was pleased to see a correlation. What's more, unique game characters and locations not found in the book or the movie were created to enhance gameplay and compliment the direction as well.

Now my work is more or less done, except for some additional pieces I'm working on to help Sega promote the game. I'm pleased to see my contribution come to life which is always the most rewarding aspect of any project. This is thanks to the team here at Shiny, who can make anything I design come to life.
