Koei, the company that brought us Nobunaga's Ambition, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games, and most recently Dynasty Warriors is well known for its strategy and action titles set in feudal Japan. One of the company's latest games will take place across this war torn period of history as well, but instead of commanding armies from a strategic map, you'll be taking on the role of one bad-ass samurai, physically hacking, slashing, and smashing your way through swarms of soldiers with the Wii remote. When the Wii's innovative control scheme was first unveiled, gamers were clamoring for swordplay, and some companies have made efforts in this direction, including Ubi Soft's Red Steel. We were able to play Koei's Samurai Warriors Katana on the TGS show floor to see what's in store.

Swordplay on Rails

Samurai Warriors Katana actually has more in common with a light gun shooter than it does a traditional action game. The TGS demo had three scenarios to play through, but the finished product should have over a hundred. Missions will typically pit you against groups of soldiers that are defeated in waves, capped off by a more difficult fight against a boss character. The enemies are essentially racing towards the foreground, and the challenge is in killing them before they're able to take a swing at you, costing you health in the process.

To attack enemies in Samurai Warriors Katana, you'll aim at enemies using the Wii remote, guided by a target reticle on screen. Once you've aimed at an enemy, you can simply press the A button to give them a quick swipe of the sword. You can also physically slash from side to side for a horizontal attack that can hit multiple enemies, or swing the remote in an upwards motion that will often knock a foe back, buying you more time to clear those closest to you. Downward swipes do a bit more damage than your basic attacks, and comboing all these motions together is an efficient way to deal additional damage. The best way to clear a path through an enemy onslaught is to engage the Musou mode that unleashes a dizzying number of blows to every enemy on screen, the number of strikes based on how quickly you can shake the remote.
